Dave,

I am very curious as to your reason to remove this. I have a good technique
(same as removing barrels rings), but this can be a difficult task
especially if you have never done this before.

That ring serves a very important purpose. It supports the tenon socket so
that it will not split or crack from the pressure of the tenon.
