Unfortunately, you are entirely correct.

To deftly return this to the topic of the clarinet, I just had exactly the
same conversation with Vincent Abato a few days ago. I have talked him into
going out and doing classes where he talks about his life and experiences
as a player, but he refuses to do them for free for the exact same reason
Dan refuses. Mr. Abato has no need for the money, but he is correct that
people will take it for granted if he works for free. My naivete, in both
these cases, has been dispelled.

If anyone is interested in having him come out I would be more happy to
discuss fees privately. This will be the one and only time I will mention
this on the list, as I have no interest in using the list to promote a
commercial venture.
