Which are the Italian makers to which you refer? I am aware only of
Orsi.
Indeed, I'm only aware of the Leblanc and Orsi instruments - are there
others, anywhere, currently made?

Subject: [kl] Ab Clarinet
<Dan Leeson enquired about the value of a Leblanc Ab clarinet.>
Leblanc does offer an Ab any more on their website, but Freeport Music

ly=LL
Is selling a new Leblanc LL Model 1176AFS Ab for $4789 (ouch!). They
also
have the 1176DS D clarinet for $3742 (another ouch!).
Unless your a member of the Carbinieri Band of Rome, why would one want
an
Ab? I heard this Roman Police band many years ago in the Piazza San
Marco
in Venice. They used two (!) Ab clarinets, and they sounded beautiful.
I
guess if they didn't, they would be farmed out to another band or shot
at
sunrise.
Seriously, I've thought about buying one... just because! Several
Italian
clarinet makers produce one.
