My college clarinet instructor, Fred Westphal, passed away last
December. He studied at Eastman. I just finished a database catalogue
of all his music that had been collected since the 1930's. Mostly
clarinet solos, some flute and sax. He studied with Langenus. His Rose
studies, Bearman and Jean-Jean studies have Langenus's editing and
comments. Many lessons/pages were signed off and dated by Langenus as
they were assigned. I recognized these editing marks as the same ones
Fred used to put in my books at each lesson. I imagine these marks are
fairly standard for the better instructors as they are the key to
musical phrasing. Anyone that has these marks in their Rose Studies
(and others) has a treasure and should never throw them away.
