Are the Rose studies too easy for the modern collegiate clarinet player?

-Adam

Adam,

I think not. I don't often hear these etudes performed well. The Rose etudes
are not well understood by many that teach them. This material has a lot to
offer!

In the U.S., students often have their first encounter with Rose in 8th or
9th grade as the band programs use excerpts from Rose for auditions into
"all-city", "all-region" and other honor groups (even chair position in
bands). In many States these etudes are the standard repertory selection for
the "all-state" auditions.

So many young players learning Rose....
So many marginal teachers teaching Rose....
End result...a lot of poorly played Rose etudes....

Add to this, the problem of forced use (required by contest organizers) of
very poorly edited editions of the Rose material. These etudes have been
around for a long time and as you have noted about Bonade's use of this
material...have become a right of passage into the "real" world of clarinet
performance. I'm not sure why someone hasn't taken the time to clean them up
and produce a nice edition. I know about what's available and I find them
all lacking in some way. I never knew David Hite...(bought a clarinet stand
from him once)...but his Southern Music Co. edition of the Rose collection
is just awful. This edition is often used in the U.S. and is over-edited.
Hite indicates so many musical "ideas" that (in my opinion) are not dictated
in/by the music collected by Rose.

Rose etudes are but one collection of material for our use as
teachers/students. I don't think that it begins and ends with Rose. (but the
Rose etudes have a lot to offer up) This being especially true as you
qualify your question with the use of "modern collegiate" player (I would
say contemporary player).

I'd say....learn the Rose etudes!

Forest Aten

P.S. Have any college student of your choice call up any top teacher/player
that knows and teaches Rose....and have them sign up for a lesson on Rose.
After an hour with that teacher ask the student if they think Rose etudes
are "too easy".
