It's possible he typed with his thumbs and sent the e-mail on a Blackberry
or something similar. Although I'd never dare to send a query that
unprofessional-looking, reporters for the largest, most reputable
publications often do feel so secure about their positions that they feel
free to get sloppy. (This may be as good a place as any for a small
personal update: I'm once again a staff writer for Scarlet Street, a film
review magazine.) The N. Y. Times does have a staff writer named Daniel J.
Wakin, who contributes regularly re. classical music. Has anyone verified
that this is his e-mail address and that the routing on that e-mail would
go back to that address and not get rerouted? (When in doubt, I type the
e-mail address into the "To" field, instead of using the reply button.) I
was glad to see that someone on the list did the right thing, by forwarding
the e-mail to Gwen Appel, instead of providing someone with information
about her without her consent. This way, she can decide for herself
whether to reply.
