Subj: [kl] Benny Goodman - flopped poster
Date: Fri, 8 Oct 2004 17:38:36 -0400

The Benny Goodman Story poster with Steve Allen playing a flopped
clarinet, with the keys reversed and his right hand on top is far from
the only example of flopped pictures. Probably the most embarrassing
one was the cover of Woodwind World in the late 1950s, showing a flopped
photo of Doriot Anthony Dwyer (principal flute in Boston). For several
issues of The Clarinet magazine, Yamaha ran a two-page flopped ad
showing an instrument finisher working on about 50 reversed upper
joints. They've now corrected it.

Around 1960, Texaco put out a free LP of Benny Goodman tracks called
Swing Into Spring. Goodman appeared on the cover correctly, but there
were Swing Into Spring billboards showing a model in a Texaco uniform,
playing in Goodman's style with the instrument pointing upward, and with
the reed on top.

Best regards.

Ken Shaw
