I'm afraid I'm the one who wrote about playing occasionally with the
reed on top. I do it to strengthen my upper lip, since I play double
lip, and also early clarinet. It does seem to free up the sound a
little.

At a master class, Gino Cioffi said he learned to play with the reed on
top. He switched only when he came to the U.S. and couldn't get a job
unless he played reed-down.
