There were some problems with my internet connection, so I could not tell
you before about the beautiful concerto I visited last Saturday.

Maybe some on this list remember there was a vague discussion between Tony
Pay and me about some aspect of Weber's concertino. Saturday night Tony was
in Utrecht (The Netherlands) to give a concerto.He played a concerto by
Mann, a (Dutch!) composer I never heard of before, and the Weber concertino
opus 26.

It was beautiful. The Mann concerto is not a very good work, but Tony was
the perfect ambassador for it. It is, I think, a very difficult piece to
play, even with the modern Boehm clarinet, but Tony played it as if it were
a work any high school sophomore should be able to play. I read it
afterwards, I think it would not misfit on an endexamination for clarinet
soloist, it really is develish in difficulty.

The Weber concertino Tony played again rather fast in my opinion, but when
we discussed it, he made clear to me why he played it in that tempo. When I
drove home I pondered what he had said, and now I understand his choice for
this tempo. But it is also a tempo, that fits his personality, I think.

It was the first time I met a lister in person. It was a good experience.
No, that is not true: David Glenn and I have played duets together in 1999,
I think, when my daughter was in Australia, and David was with his
mother-in-law, as he wanted to visit the "Sail"- happening. Both meetings
gave me a very positive feeling. But then: in all those (nearly 32) years I
play an instrument myself I met only once a musician I did not like! Somehow
people playing music are a special kind of persons, maybe?

But, to come back to the topic of this mail: Tony, thank you, you gave me a
wonderful time listening to you.
