So does the community band I play in: music of grade 1 and 2. For most
players in this band it is there maximum, when we try grade 2 1/2 orchestra
pieces half the members of the band are not able to make it,not even if they
would study 10 years on it ... The rest can make grade 3 music (on a scale
from 1 to 7).

You can imagine this music is not very challenging for the three players who
can do better than that, one the soprano sax player, the other one an alto
sax player (really gifted: I taught her saxophone only 7 months and she was
already the best player in the saxophone section: she was the only one in
Weber's concertino (for oboe!, it is much more difficult than his opus 26)
who could play the whole part!

Nonetheless we stay with the orchestra, exactly because it is such a nice
club, and sometimes we get some more challenging pieces. Whenever we get
these, there is a great resistance from the rest of the club, but by not
putting them on the stand every week and studying them initially very slowly
the conductor gets everyone so far he or she will at least study it. For the
three of us every now and again he plays it in tempo, but often it occurs
that it ends up that we are the only three ones still playing. Of course
this never takes more than a minute, maybe one and a half.
