There is a wonderful story about Alex Williams. He was playing
second in the NY Phil. when Toscanini was conducting in the 30s.
The first clarinet play got sick and Alex moved up to play the
big solo in Forza Del Destino. He played it beautifully and
Toscanini congratulated him.

A few years later when the NBC Symphony was formed, Alex got the
first clarinet job and one of the first works done at the first
concert was the overture to Forza. Alex played the solo.
Toscanini did not like it and said, "Why my second clarinet
player in the Philharmonic played it better than you."

The "A. Williams" is Alex Williams. Played in both the NY Phil.
and a ton of other orchestras. Before he died a year or two ago,
he lived not far from me and I would see him now and then.
