Just to enter the discussion, I conducted the Kingsborough College
Community Band in Brooklyn, New York for twenty-five years. During
this time we never held auditions for seats nor did we have them in
order to join the band. When the band was sometimes unbalanced (not
enough trombones), I asked the members to look for players. This worked
for all the time I was there. Among the very interesting events was
the second clarinetist of an opera company in Russia chose to play
third clarinet. Whenever I had a guest conductor, I played in the band
and always played harmony parts. Many good musicians prefer to play
supporting roles (consider all the excellent violists in the world).
The band played many premiers and even played at a CBDNA convention.
When the younger players wanted to move up, they just did. Somehow, it
worked.
