Correct David. Between the temperature and the lack
of moisture, many bacteria and viruses do not survive
for any length of time outside the body. There are
some exceptions. You're also right about the report
on the wood vs. plastic cutting boards - woods
apparently have a number of anti-bacterial compounds.

As others have noted as well, you should have some
degree of immmunity to prevent immediate reinfection.
