When I was in high school we started a stage band (second semester my
senior year). I played the first tenor sax part on clarinet because we HAD
NO tenor sax, and I had been playing clarinet for only a few months, so it
did not seem wise to switch me just then. I loved it! I had been
listening to my mother's big band records for years so I understood the
style and already played clarinet with vibrato just from emulating Goodman
and Shaw. (Interesting aside -- one piece we played had a significant solo
for the tenor. I found out some time later that it lays MUCH easier on
tenor than clarinet, not up and down across the break!)

Fortunately, since my recent move, I have hooked up with another big band
and am now enjoying playing the first tenor part once more, but this time
on a sax!

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is TOO LOUD!
