Well, there *are* the low Es in the passage 8 bars before number 20 in the
second movement. There hasn't been a rest long enough to make a secure
change (not that that's necessarily an impediment to composers' color
choices) since the 6-flats section Mark mentions. It seems as if Mahler
could have found some other way around that problem, but if he needs to have
had an excuse....
