It is even being done in some amateur productions these days! Personally,
I think it is a HORRIBLE development. It removes the "magic" from the
whole experience. Of course, if the all the instruments in question are
electronic keyboards and guitars, what difference does it make? I am aware
of a local production of "Jesus Christ Superstar" a few years ago where the
"pit" was located underneath a raised, raked stage. The musicians could
only see the action, and the actors see the conductor, by use of video
monitors.
