When our community band restarted again (after a 10 year hiatus), the
situation was exactly as Kelly describes. I was stewing about the fact
that unlike school bands, there is no automatic annual turnover and I'd
be stuck behind forever. Well, this band had its ups and downs, and after
one of the downs the clarinet section got together and decided to pass
around the parts. (I'd already played a concert as the only clarinet!).

We used to pass around the pieces, but it was hard on the conductor as he
was never sure where the first part was; now, since we have 3 concerts a
season and 6 people who want to play first, it works out very well to
have 2 different people on the part each time. This only works if there
are at least 6 clarinets! Otherwise, we'd have only one first and have to
work it out some other way.

The trumpet section also switches parts, but they also play musical
chairs during rehearsals and concerts, and we weren't willing to do that.

This has been fine with the various conductors we've had. I'm not sure
how we'd've handled it if there were 1 or 2 people who just assumed
they'd always play first -- but I do know that after having this
arrangement, I'd sure work hard to institute it if it wasn't this way.
