I think his hands were in the right position, but they printed
the picture in a left/right reverse which made it appear that his
hands were in the wrong position.

Actually Steve Allen did study the clarinet for some time, as
training for
the film. It really didn't do him much good.
As far as having the hands in the correct, take a look at the DVD
cover of
"The BG Story". You'll find that the hands are, indeed,
backwards. I wrote
the studio, complaining of this error, but, of course, they never
responded.
