Thank you for the advice I will keep it in mind as I go on to higher
education...plus if I were to get some of my own jazz stuff I could play it just for
fun :) I have copies of almost everything I played in HS...but they are only my
part or a part I liked a lot...I had to make copies because all the other
clarinet players would take the folders home to look like they practiced and not
use them so I made me copies in the office and I really DID go home with my
music every weekend...and every night too...I guess that's why I beat them out
on the solos I wanted

Here is the secret:

1. Be willing to play saxophone to get into the ensemble and be willing to
continue playing saxophone while in the ensemble.
2. Own your own copies of music with substantial clarinet parts. Convince
your director to play it (which shouldn't be hard, there is so much great
jazz band music featuring clarinet).
Playing with the tenors all the time may be fun, but it puts the harmony
line above the melodic line. Not so great, musically speaking. Playing
trumpet parts... well, it worked for me in the beginning, but becomes
quickly unfulfilling.
