Here is the secret:

1. Be willing to play saxophone to get into the ensemble and be willing to
continue playing saxophone while in the ensemble.
2. Own your own copies of music with substantial clarinet parts. Convince
your director to play it (which shouldn't be hard, there is so much great
jazz band music featuring clarinet).

Playing with the tenors all the time may be fun, but it puts the harmony
line above the melodic line. Not so great, musically speaking. Playing
trumpet parts... well, it worked for me in the beginning, but becomes
quickly unfulfilling.
