Anyone mention "'Round Midnight," the Bertrand Tavernier film with THE Dexter Gordon
playing an extremely alcoholic tenor and soprano saxophonist? There are hints in the
character of Dale Turner that are certainly intended to remind people of Bud Powell,
Lester Young, and Coleman Hawkins. François Cluzet plays the idolizing fan who "adopts"
Dale Turner and attempts to keep him sober enough to play (sometimes it almost works).
Martin Scorsese turns up as a fast-talking New York impresario who books Turner into his
last gigs, a return to New York. Real life musicians: Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard,
Wayne Shorter, and Ron Carter. Lonette McKee appears as a singer named Darcey Leigh, and
oddly is wearing a camellia in her hair. Can't imagine the reference....

I don't think anyone would suggest that Dexter Gordon didn't know which end of the
mouthpiece went where or that he needed someover to play where he stood there:-).
