This is old news for regional theatre where they often never had enough
space in the pits to begin with.

Whether in the pit or out of the pit the music is mic'd and mixed for the
house. So it really doesn't matter where the players are. There are many
reasons why it is called a pit, so I doubt the musicians are complaining
(except when the electronic equipment breaks... which never happens...
honest!).

I really don't see a musical drawback (well, certainly an all acoustic
performance might be more enjoyable.. but I'm not holding my breath). Maybe
in 50 years we'll get HIP musicals on "authentic" instruments! I kind of
feel sorry for all the kids who wont be able to go down and look in to the
pit at all the funny looking instruments (and ask about the "funny looking
all black saxophone" [bass clarinet]). I used to love doing that as a kid
and I used to enjoy talking with the kids during intermission when I was in
a pit.
