This subject was discussed here some time ago. At that time I think I
remember Diane Karius discussing the fact that wood, when it dries, no
longer provides the warm, moist atmosphere necessary for these beasties
(viruses and bacteria) to live. I also remember a study in which wooden
cutting boards were tested against ceramic and plastic cutting boards
to see which ones would allow food-borne bacteria to live longest.
Interestingly enough, the wooden boards had a lower bacteria count
after a few hours elapsed time than the plastic or ceramic boards did.
So, if you remove the reed from the mouthpiece and dry it carefully, it
should be fine tomorrow. Still, I make one reed the "sacrificial reed",
play it until I feel better, then toss it.

My unscientific $0.02 - Diane, correct me if I remember wrong.

David
