Subj: [kl] Studies for Summer, and Graduate/Post-Graduate Opportunities

Hey all! I know this is going to seem like a broad request, but
I need information for me to follow up on for stuff in my (not
so) distant future.

I am pursuing a masters in woodwind pedagogy (teaching and
performance practices of clarinet, oboe, flute, saxophone, and
bassoon.)

Because of how difficult it was to get things the way I wanted
for my Masters, I am looking a few years ahead toward my
doctoral studies, and for summer festivals for graduate students
(i.e. no age limit) or training orchestras (also, no age limit.)

My needs seem simple to me, but are not necessarily so in
combination.

***1. I would like to be able to TEACH on the college level
while doing my Doctorate (teaching assistantship at the college
I attend, or an adjunct position at a nearby college.)

I am currently NOT in a teaching assistanthsip for my masters,
and would like to have college teaching experience on my resume
when I graduate. I tried for 2 years to coordinate the school
and the teaching assistantship, but was trumped by doctoral
candidates for the teaching assistantships. I figure if I look
NOW, I may be able to pursue a teaching assistantship one year
or so ahead of time, so that I can have a better chance of doing
a teaching assistantship on the doctoral level.

***2. I would like to be located within 2 hours (driving) of a
city of at least 500,000 people, and/or within 4 hours (driving)
of a city of 1,000,000 or more.

I am currently living in a town of 40,000 people, but am content
to be 100 miles from a city of 1,000,000. I don't mind living in
a metropolitan area, and don't mind living in a small town. I
just mind not being able to at least drive a few hours to get to
civilization.

I would DEFINITELY consider studying abroad in Europe, Canada,
Mexico, South America, or Australia., as long as it didn't cost
me an arm and a leg to do so, and I could secure scholarships,
assistantships, and/or loans to cover the costs of tuition and
living expenses.

***3. I would like the combination of assistantships,
fellowships, merit based, and need based awards/loans to cover
the tuition and cost of living for me while in my doctorate, so
I do not have to work a non-music job while doing my Doctorate
(i.e. no pizza delivery, food mart, Walmart, or retail, etc...)

I will already have $37,000 in loans when I graduate from my
masters, even though I am on a full assistantship. Some
assistantships only pay part of tuition, and I would need to be
able to get moneys to make up the difference for the living
expenses. I also would like to stay under $100,000 in total
loans when I finish my Doctorate.

***4. I would like to study with a teacher that is somewhat well
known, although I can be persuaded to study with a fabulous
teacher that is not as well known, if most of my other "wish
list" is in place.

***5. I would like to have performance opportunities within and
outside the school in the nearby vicinity to enhance my
performance experiences.

***6. I would like my degree and/or studies to be orchestral
audition oriented, as this will be my primary need for
instruction for post graduate employment.

***7. Training orchestras (such as Chicago Civic Orchestra or
New World Symphony) would also be something I would consider to
take a year or two off before going for the doctorate (or even
before I finish my masters.) I will be 36 this year, so it would
need to be a group without an age limitation of less than 40ish,
for me to be able to participate.

***8. and lastly...I would like to do some festival orchestras
and other festival type things for summers, starting 2005
summer. Again, $ is an issue, so I can't come up with $ without
loans being offered, if scholarships aren't available. Study
abroad for the summers would be a very welcome idea too!

Thank you all in advance for any and every idea and suggestion,
regardless of how trivial it may seem.
