A belated reply from someone with both professional and practical
experience with these things.

A) Use drug store hydrogen peroxide. It will kill the "germs" on the reed
without harming it, and without harming you either. (It will also kill the
mold spores, which is what I use it for - regularly). Peroxide is used as
a mouthwash, among other things, and after it dries, there is NOTHING
left. (4 H2O2 = 2 O2 + 4 H2O)

B) When you recover from the cold, you have developed immunity from those
"germs", at least for a while. So there is probably no worry anyway.
