we're going to have a serious shortage of
educated players in the coming years. I would hazard to propose we already
have such a shortage (although certainly not on this list).

Adam,

We have no shortage of "educated" clarinet players. (in this country) There
are far more competent players than there are jobs.

The recent teaching jobs posted on the list are a pretty good indication
that many smaller colleges and universities are relying on one person to
teach both clarinet/sax. This makes fewer jobs available...right?

Many orchestras are hiring fewer players and the smaller regional orchestras
are having such a bad go of it, with our lousy economy, that many are
failing. Even when they don't fail, the pay goes down to a point where the
performers depending (trying to) on their music for a living....move on.
