The most I have had in my band was 3...usually one or two...and it was good
that way. they just covered the parts needed...our jazz band was over populated
though with about 8 or 9 altos and 5 tenors and one bari sax (he cut some out
on important concerts and stuff)...with brass too though...I only played the
sax in the Jazz band (also a "pep" band) and when i started we were a lot
smaller...it is the "cool" instrument to play...my mom wanted me to play it...i
didn't mind i will play anything...I was a woodwind switchover for marching
band...he tried to make everyone switch for marching band...I played the
baritone...most did switch and a lot of us played more then one instrument...and we
played college music too...and I have heard a couple universities play our
stuff...like UW play "Woodwind Polka" and then jammed it all together and made it
sound poppy...it was the same arrangement i could tell and we used that song as
a filler for a concert we did to earn money and sell spaghetti we practiced it
like 5 times maybe and were already better then UW??? I was surprised...

I don't know that clarinet is going "out" per se - I think it's more that
with the evolution of "Kenny G" and all those lite sax players, sax is
"cool" and more kids want to play it, that's all. I think they see it on TV
a lot more than they do clarinet, and that's another reason.

The shame of it is, you really don't need more than 4-5 sax players in your
high school band (one on a part, an extra for jazz band) because they play
louder than the whole band....let alone the clarinet section........
