Subj: [kl] Unusual Buffet serial number
Date: Sat, 2 Oct 2004 01:04:20 -0400

I recently examined an older Buffet clarinet which was for sale. The wood
was excellent.

It was a Buffet Bb clarinet with an articulated G# key. Pads were all
leather.

So far, nothing unusual...

Now for the puzzling part:

The serial number (on both pieces) was 34138 B.

Yes - there are was a B following the 5 digit serial number.

It was not an "8", or an "F" but definitely a capital "B" which was
slightly smaller and to the right of the 5 digit number. It was clearly an
original marking and was not added later.

I know that 34138 would be dated to about 1947 (pre-R13) but am baffled by
the "B" The small letter "B" was very clear and on both upper an lower
sections.

Has anyone ever come across this before?

Any guesses on the "B"?

Thanks,
Glenn B Kantor
