The answer I've gotten from at least two of the physicians I've seen over
the years is that colds are caused by viruses and your immune system builds
your level of antibodies to the virus in the process of defeating it. So
once you've gotten over the cold, you're immune to another attack of the
same virus for some time. The same should hold true for flu or any other
kind of viral infection.

But if you aren't comfortable with that, wash the mouthpiece and ditch the
reed.
