The Dixieland Band I play clarinet with performed at the Governors Ball
which was held in conjunction with the conference of cities and towns
convention which is made up of mayors, town managers, town board members
and other politicians from across the state.

We were supposed to play from 6-7PM so at the appointed time with an empty
room we began playing. For a half hour we played to an empty room just to
amuse ourselves. Then this woman from the hotel walked in, got behind the
bar, turned on the lights and "BLAM" there were hundreds of folks in the
room. Our contact person asked us to extend our playing to 7:30, so we
did. With what turned out to be our last number I looked up and there were
probably 300 folks milling around. We did the song, I looked up and the
room was empty. They had closed the bar during the number and the room
cleared out in under a minute!

I guess when it comes to politicians; "Open the bar and they will come....g"
