On the new model Buffet Alto clarinet, closing the vent hole on the bell
(with your foot, a cork, a specially made key, etc) would produce an
excellent low D. The cork would sacrifice the low e-flat, of course.

Most alto clarinets don't have this hole. I have heard of players that had
an extension made that would fit between the lower joint and the bell to
get a low D. I presume it had a key so the low e-flat would still work.
