Subj: [kl] Eb Players Beware!
Date: Mon, 27 Sep 2004 02:44:08 -0400

If you play Eb soprano clarinet and are handed the Eb
clarinet part to a piece called "Aurora" by Thomas
Doss, run!

If you attempt to play the same version I just tried
to play, you will find:

1. The part calls for low notes your clarinet doesn't
play (didn't even phase me - seen it often enough on
Bb, just never on Eb).
2. The Eb soprano part doubles the tuba and bass
clarinet for half the piece...
3. The harmony is REALLY interesting...
4. Your part has 41 extra measures in the first half
of the piece, is missing 15 measures in the second
half of the piece (part of which is a repeat with
first, second, and third endings), and has 7 extra
measures in the last quarter of the piece to make sure
you are lost throughout the entire piece...

And in case you decide to check your part against the
score, well... The score (not condensed) doesn't show
an Eb soprano clarinet part, despite the fact that you
will be holding an Eb part in your hot, sweaty little
fist!

As best I can figure out, pgs. 1 and 3 might be a real
Eb clarinet part... but pgs. 2 and 4 of the part are,
in fact, the Bb bass clarinet part (and no, it hasn't
been transposed for the Eb).
