I got my first R13 in 1970, and paid about $400. Then in 1975 I was going
into college, and my grandmother offered to buy me a new one to start
college that summer. We traded my old R13 toward a set of the 150th
anniversary R13s. The difference after trade was $895.00, and included a Bay
mouthpiece.

I also got my first alto sax in 1970. It was a King Marigaux, which was an
SML pro horn with all their top features except rolled tone holes, for $300.
It came in one of the neat old King alligator cases, with a Meyer
mouthpiece. Still have it, and it's still an incredible instrument.
