Lovely story. I have a sadder one. I am making a harp for myself, and used
the standard Sitka spruce for the soundboard. The books tell you that you
cannot get the 20-growth-rings-to-the-inch wood now because the old slow
growths have all been used up, and the usual available now is only 12 to the
inch.

I also bought a large quantity of reclaimed pine, from an architectural
salvage store in London. This came from the roof of Spitalfields market and
is about 1850. After use, I idly checked the growth rings on an offcut. 20
to the inch. Perfect soundboard material.

All nailed and glued irreversibly on my music room floor.
