I have done experiments with tube (analog) and modern amplifiers that have very similar outputs with the same speakers in order to find out the answer to that question.

Digital response is "crisper" due to the way that it is constructed. This means that there is more accuracy or detail. I think this also accounts for the fact that you lose some of the well rounded, full sound associated with the tubes.

Bottom line, if you really like to reduplicate the period genre... tubes have got to be the answer. If, on the other hand you like the clarity and detail bundled with a million electronic things you can do with it... by all means, go digital.

Needless to say, this applies to amplifying any kind of instrument.

Just my personal thought.
