Actually, I'm seeing more using tube preamps and somewhat overdriving the
2nd stage, then using solid-state for the power amps. Easy to get out 300W
of clean power that way. I more than once melted the 6L6s on my Bassman
when I had that (along with blowing the output transformer as the plate
sagged into the grid & cathode ... and a 50W output transformer wasn't
cheap!)
