Of course, if you are "very reluctant" to apply yourself to a problem, you
will not apply yourself wholeheartedly to the problem and you will fail for
"lack of time". If you embrace the problemn and throw yourself at it
wholly, you can make astonishing progress.

A D is two fingers and thumb, whether written at the bottom of the treble
clef or the center of the bass clef. The Franck symphony bass clarinet part
is not unduly technical, with lots and lots of held notes. It is not
difficult to read at sight. Any reasonably intelligent player can learn to
read bass clarinet in bass clef, or for that matter to transpose C clarinet
onto Bb at sight, in 45 minutes. But only if you try.
