But Ton should not be left with the presumption that NO fine
clarinet players used metal clarinets. The principal player in
the BSO when Mazzeo joined it as a young many had been using
metal clarinets for years. Given a good one, I would not hesitate
for 1/2 second to use a metal clarinet or even a metal basset
horn. I bid on a metal bass clarinet on ebay about two years ago
but someone smarter and faster than me got it.

Ton, this topic has been debated so many times (without ever
being
resolved) that many of us don't want to debate it again.
However, it's
only fair to mention to you:

If you want to read some of the 100's (1000's?) of pages that
have
already been posted on Klarinet about the effects of 'air column
shape'
vs. 'material of construction' on a wind instrument's sound, you
can
search the Klarinet archives for "material tone".
