It's not quite transposition, is it? It's just reading in the bass clef.

I remember that as a young student I once had to play the Strauss 'Happy
Workshop' C clarinet part on a Bb clarinet, because I didn't have access --
or thought I didn't have access -- to a C clarinet.

Now *that's* transposition;-)

He doesn't have to experiment -- he just has to do it. And a lot of that
happens by ear, in this sort of context.

Anyway, thanks to the material offered him by members of this list, he
