I've had pretty good results with Tom's system, and I think the price is
reasonable for what you get. Despite having studied with Joe Allard my
knife technique has never been that great, and I've not had particularly
good results with reed rush. One could certainly duplicate Tom's equipment,
probably for a smaller price, but I do think it's reasonable. I find I have
to sometimes re-balance reeds that I thought I'd gotten pretty balanced on
a previous day, but that would be true for most systems, I believe. And it
is indeed a joy to be able to go through a new box of reeds fairly quickly
and start off "ahead of the curve" so to speak in terms of having reeds
that are ready to go. And it can be used easily with any size reeds, Eb
soprano down through baritone sax, without any machine adjustments, so
that's nice too.
By the way, since there has been a good deal of discussion recently on
Klezmer clarinet, I'd like to put in a big plug of appreciation for a
recording by Andy Statman, called "Between Heaven and Earth-Music of the
Jewish Mystics" (Shanachie 64079...from 1997, so I don't know if it's still
in print). I've no idea how "authentic" it is, and it's not rip-roaring
Klezmer dance music, but it IS extraordinarily beautiful and spiritual, and
to me is very heartfelt, and played with originality, and a very unique
sensibility....
