I agree with you regarding no two reeds being alike. We can get stuck
very easily into trying to find a reed just like our best one. I use the
following criteria for a "Good" reed:
Does it free me from the mechanical to do what I need to do musically?
Does it allow me to change tone colors easily?
Is it in tune in all registers?
Can I give articulate in many different styles on this reed?

If I have a reed that lets me do all of these things, It's a good reed.=20
Then I continue the process so that I am not in a panic to find the next
"good" reed.

I have never used a reed maching for my entire career and can say
honestly I
have at least 5 excellent reeds that work well atr one time. I have a
theory that there is no exact copy of anything...just as some days one
doesn't have the same energy as the previous day...

However, I do have freinds who use this system and get fine results..
