I think managing this B flat is one reason for beginners staying with reeds
which are really too soft for them. You can improve the tone by adding various
fingers further down the instrument for instance, L.H. 2 & 3 & the c#/G# key,
plus R.H. 2 & 3 and maybe a little finger key may work. It also helps in
crossing the break to have some of these fingers down. A better-sounding (but
harder to finger) B flat can be obtained by using the a key with the second
trill key from
the top. This can be sharp, though - it is difficult to hit this key at speed,
too.
