The throat Bb is traditionally the weakest note on any clarinet. The
register hole, doubling on that note as a tone hole, is too small to
effectively do the job. Thus we have various inventors' attempts to solve
the problem with special mechanisms (Stubbins, Mazzeo, etc.) with varying
degrees of success but always greater mechanical complexity.
