My bass player son would not be content if I didn't suggest Jaco Pastorius,
either on his own recordings,
with Weather Report or as a sideman (eg with Joni Mitchell)
BTW there is a book by Carol Kaye called something like "Patterns for Bass"
which is a favourite of many bass students I know (includes transcriptions of
bass parts from some famous recordings)
