I was always extremely considerate of others when giving lessons in an
Apartment. Even down to the very Apartment that I selected - teaching
was in mind (I selected a top floor corner apartment). I would never
EVER teach in the living room in an apartment as that is just plain
inconsiderate of other neighbors. Nor practice there!

Suggestion (which I did) is to only practice / teach in one of the
bedrooms and not the master bedroom either.
That way the neighbors can easily escape the "noise". Music to some
is "noise" to others - it stinks to have to live in apartment already,
why compound it with infringing on others hearing space. Lessons in an
apartment should happen after 8PM and not before 9AM in my opinion.
Saturdays after 10AM

That's what the Music Store Studios are for - musicians who live in
spaces shared with others.

btw: Music Lessons are not considered a "business" whereas a Ballet
Studio is (under zoning laws). If somebody is running a full scale
music school then it could be considered a zoning infringement (I know
of a home based music school that was closed under the zoning laws
when the block complained - as it was a full scale music school it
wasn't considered just somebody giving lessons at their home).

In doing some research on clarinet teaching, I came across this
interesting thread at
http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/apt/msg010310341286.html
regarding "noise" in apartment from teaching clarinet lessons.
Below is the original post and I got a good chuckle from some of the
responses. I'd like to know what you all think about the issue:
