Keep in mind that Presser's publishing business pre-dates their retailing
arm by a good many years. They were already an established major publishing
concern when they acquired (30 or so years ago) the old Elkan-Vogel store
and moved what was then Philadelphia's major retail sheet music dealer out
of the city to Bryn Mawr. The retail department was maintained, I think, as
a separate entity and certainly was never the company's main focus, which
has always remained publishing. Nor has it (the retail business) been a
major part of Philadelphia's musical life for a number of years. I doubt if
the store's demise will matter much in the long run, while their
publications, which I think do matter, will I hope go on.
