He was far more than that; he wrote hundreds of tunes and essentially
reworked the entire sabbath liturgy as a Hassidic Rabbi with a very
devoted following. There are synagogues which use his tunes exclusively.
When I worked at Columbia University, the Hillel would do Carlebach
services once every month or two; it took me a while to figure out why I
couldn't follow along with anything!
