It sounds as though he's telling you that if it doesn't hurt (isn't
uncomfortable) you won't do any damage. If it won't do any damage (won't
harm you), there's no reason to hold back. So the doctor's instructions, as
you've related them, seem to be - go ahead unless it hurts.
