Thank you David; it is very easy to fall into the pit of
nomenclature here. What I am delighted about is that there have
been so many clarinetists interested in both the basset clarinet
and the basset horn over the last 20 years. When I moved to
California, I was the only private person from San Luis Obispo up
to the Washington State who that owned a basset horn. If the
professor of clarinet at Washington State had not made one for
himself (and play it beautifully too) I would extend the line of
demarkation to the Canadian border.

Alan Balter used to say that I was the finest basset horn owning
basset hornist in all of Northern California, a title that I won
by default. Alex Williams, a great basset horn player, lived
nearby but he didn't own one so I continued to win by default.
Today I am the second best in Los Altos, CA, a tiny city. This
shows how broad the spread of basset horn playing is. I think
that if I move to Nevada, I could be the best in the state. Is
there one in the state? Remember, he or she would have to own
one, not merely play it.

----- Thanks Dan...I apologize on that one..I geuss we use all
these terms
interchangeable too freely at times.

Soprano clarinet players are not as up on the differences as they
should if
I am ever quoted it should be double checked for accuracy.
