I don't know about D clarinets but I played a piece (I think called American Games) by Nicolas Maw which called for the clarinets in A and Bb. There was no bass clarinet part though.

Just a further question on the usefulness of the A bass clarinet in the band. I can see the use of the Ab clarinet, and indeed any instrument in the flat keys, but to put an instrument that is more comfortable in the sharp keys just sounds counter intuitive to the norm. Is there any other info about that? It sounds fascinating. Perhaps a band piece for D, A clarinets as well?
